Wordnik & Wordie: Moving Day!

So we’ve unpacked all the Wordie boxes and all the data is moved in and put away nicely, so everything should be ready for Wordniks and Wordies to live together in peace and harmony.

If you’re a Wordie, in the vast majority of the cases your Wordnik username is the same as your Wordie username — to start using Wordnik, all you have to do is reset your password with this link. All your tags, lists, comments, and coolness will magically show up on Wordnik under your username.

A few Wordies and Wordniks had the same usernames — great minds think alike — so we staged a few contests of luck and skill to determine which person grabbed the prize. If your username was affected, you’ll get an email soon with your new username and a link to reset your password. (Again, all your data will show up on Wordnik under your new username.)

If we were pretty sure you were the same person on Wordie and Wordnik (same username, same or suspiciously similar email addresses) we merged the accounts. (Log in with your Wordnik password.) If it was merely a case of mistaken identity and you are now living with a stranger, let us know ASAP!

This was a BIG undertaking (kind of like docking the space shuttle, only without the triumphant classical-music soundtrack), so if you notice any wonkiness, please let us know. We’ll be doing a bit more polishing and dusting over the next couple of days to make extra-double-sure that everything is where it’s supposed to be and does what it is supposed to do!

  1. I have an uneasy feeling about this Wordie / Wordnik merge. It’s kinda like putting 2 large groups of cats together in one home, there’s bound to be a catfight or two, or maybe just one epically colossal cataclysmic brawl. Us Wordies were used to more community. Where’s the community on Wordnik? What’s up with the BORING Homepage with NO INFO!!!? Why can’t I edit comments? Why can’t I add external links?   4. My list of Japanese words (kanji) has been horribly, horribly corrupted. Many of the words have been completely replaced either with gibberish or mildly inappropriate phrases involving “sexual intercourse.” What on earth is going on, and is there a way to recover this list? I was using it as a tool to augment my Japanese language studies.

  5. Sidheag! Your beautiful list will be fixed as soon as we can. Our engineers are working on the issue as we speak (and everyone else is shoveling coal into the engine). Hang in there. It might take some time to resolve.

    I’m disappointed, though. I don’t see the words related to sexual intercourse.

  6. The gibberish and bizarre phrases have been replaced with mysterious question marks, it seems. Definitely an improvement!

  8. Congrats on the big move! I just got back from an offline week, and missed waving goodbye to Old Wordie–but I’m looking forward to finding my way here and I hope we can all just get along. 🙂 John, et al., thanks for all the hard work. Hope the shakedown cruise isn’t too rough.

  9. Hey! I had the name “jesse” on Wordie. I was very happy that I had scored that name. And now I’m … super-jesse?? I mean, I’m flattered you think I’m “super” but the old name had a certain … elegant simplicity that I miss. 🙁

  10. Hi Jesse! I’m sorry you lost the username coin toss. 🙁 There is another Wordnik user named “jesse” but their profile is private, which is why you can’t see it.

    I know RSS feeds are on our wishlist, too — we’ll be sure to announce it here when it happens!

  15. Oh, thanks for the reply Erin. I’m kind of starstruck that you replied to me personally. 🙂

    Grasping at straws… was it totally a coin toss? Perhaps the other Jesse isn’t an active user? Might it be possible to contact him/her? (Ah, the joys of a unisex name.)

    Otherwise, is there any way of changing the user name? I tried setting up a new account, but as far as I can tell, new users don’t even get to pick names to begin with.
