Today’s words of the day are decennium, decadal, and decennary, all which can mean “a decade.” Happy new decade! (Yes, decades start in the zero-ending years. No, there was no Year Zero. Yes, it can seem illogical until you consider that a year is counted when it’s finished, not when it begins.)
Yes, years are counted at the end, but the fact there was no zero year is not really relevant. There was no zero year because the number zero was not only not invented when they were doing the calendar, but was banned by the Church as forbidden knowledge.
More to the point, though, is that the calendar is pretty much arbitrary. Ask, for instance, “What year was Jesus born?” The answer is neither year zero, nor one, nor minus one: http://biblelight.net/year.htm.
