There was no zero year because the number zero was not only not invented when they were doing the calendar, but was banned by the Church as forbidden knowledge. More to the point, though, is that the calendar is pretty much arbitrary. Ask, for instance, "What year was Jesus born?" The answer is neither year zero, nor one, nor minus one: http://biblelight.net/year.htm. Yes, years are counted at the end, but the fact there was no zero year is not really relevant.
